Severe intestinal bacterial infections generally benefit from antibiotics treatment. However, when all available antibiotics fail to control the infection, the last choice might be fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). In recent years, according to the data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 14,000 persons died of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) every year in the United States. Recently, FMT has provided birth opportunities for more and more patients. In 2013, FMT was included in the American medical guideline for the frequent CDI recurrence. Therefore, FMT was selected as one of the "ten medical breakthroughs" in the world by TIME magazine in 2013.FMT has been used an important therapy with at least 1700 years in the human medical record (Zhang Faming, et al. Am J Gastroenterol. 2012). Up to the end of 2017, about 40,000 cases has been treated with FMT in the world. There has been more than 80 hospitals which once performed FMT for diseases treatment in China in recent 5 years.

There is still a lack of accurate statistical data on patients with CDI or other severe intestinal infection in China, but severe intestinal infection occur in tens of thousands of patients every day. They may pay a huge cost for the treatment of severe infection, or even lose their lives due to the limited condition to carry out FMT in the local hospitals. In order to save more lives, as the key technology of National Digestive Disease Clinical Medicine Research Center, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University and Xijing Hospital of Digestive Diseases co-sponsored the Chinese fmtBank emergency rescue plan and established the public emergency platform (www.fmtbank.org). At the same time, we provide national NON-PROFIT medical service for saving patients’ lives with the best safety and quality control based on GMP condition, automactic purification system for microbiota from donated stool and "one-hour FMT protocol".
